current mood: relieved

Despite a horrible third period offensively, Kiprusoff helps to keep the Flames in the game and maintain a lead. An EN by Phaneuf confirms the first win of the season. Hopefully the team plays for an entire 60 minutes next time?

Flames offer Theoren Fleury a try-out
The Flames legend is getting the shot he wanted
Saturday, 09.12.2009 / 11:11 AM / News
Calgary Flames General Manager Darryl Sutter announced today that Theoren Fleury has been invited to attend the Flames 2009 Training Camp on a try-out basis.

“Once we determined that Theoren was training to our standards and the League permitted his return to on-ice competition, it wasn’t a hard decision for us to provide him with this opportunity,” said Sutter. “In the history of our franchise, he is among the top players all-time and regardless of what happens; he can finish as an active player. This is a day-to-day thing and we will develop our expectations over the course of training camp.”

“I am both thankful and very excited to be given this opportunity by Darryl and the Flames organization,” said Fleury. “I intend to come to camp today with a strong work ethic, a positive attitude and to be treated like any other member of the group.”

Flames main camp will get underway today, September 12th with medicals and fitness testing at the Pengrowth Saddledome. The medicals and testing will begin at 8:00 A.M.

I love Theo, and have so many of my first hockey memories associated with him. I just hope he's in shape, it'd be nice to see him retire here. Just don't cause too much shit along the way, haha.

EDIT: I'm a day late, my bad! I missed the other Theo entry somehow. :(

I'll bet it's polarizing but knowing what he's been through and the work he's put in to make an attempt at coming back I'm glad the first shot will be Calgary. He signed a minor league contract and will be looking to work his way up. Love to see him back skating one more time with Iggy!!

The Flames have a new tough guy: former Ottawa Senators pugilist Brian McGrattan.

The six-foot-three, 235-pound Hamilton native, taken 104th overall by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, was an unrestricted free agent.

"I'm very excited to come to Calgary and be a part of this team," said McGrattan.

McGrattan, 27, played more than 140 games for the Senators before he was traded to the Phoenix Coyotes for a fifth-round pick in June, 2008.

After just three games with the Desert Dogs, he voluntarily entered the substance abuse program administered jointly by the NHL and the players’ association.

McGrattan replaces enforcer Andre Roy, who played 44 games for the Flames last season but is an unrestricted free agent.

..I like him, I really do. So this made me happy. :)

Iggy, J-Bo, Dion and Regehr are the list of the Flames who got men's Olympic camp invites.

Congrats/good luck to all of them.

I love that the camp's always held in Calgary though. (August 24-27.) ... Hey, are we allowed to go watch?! LOL

The Calgary Flames dipped their toes into the free agent pool Wednesday, signing forward Fredrik Sjostrom to a two-year, $1.5 million contract.

In 79 games with the New York Rangers last season, the 26-year old recorded seven goals and six assists.

''Freddie is a reliable two way player,'' general manager Darryl Sutter said in a statement. ''We are happy to add him to our group as we identify him as a player who plays our style of game.''

Sjostrom, a native of Fargelanda, Sweden, was an original first round draft selection (11th overall) of the Phoenix Coyotes in 2001.

In 358 career NHL games, the 6'1" winger has recorded 88 points from 41 goals and 47 assists.

Who will stay? Who will go elsewhere? Who will we get instead of?

I hope we sign Pardy. And maybe Aucoin but at a significantly lower salary (since he makes his off-season home in Calgary, maybe that would smooth things). Would love Cammalleri to stay, but unlikely. Lundmark might be a player to offer a one-way rather than two-way option as before. I'm glad Boyd got a qualifying offer.

Sutter did it.

Good for the team, but it pretty much means Cammalleri is not going to be signed, no? :(
